About
Us
Hill Top Farm is in the North York Moors National Park. We produce
organic lamb and cereals. In 2005 we started to mill locally grown
wheat on the farm in order to preserve its distinctive taste and
identity. Our goal as organic farmers is to produce high quality
food in an environmentally friendly and socially responsible way.
We do this in practice by sourcing locally grown organic wheat from
neighbouring producers and marketing it locally.
By milling local produce we minimise “food miles”, reduce transport
costs and are able to create mutually beneficial trading networks
with farmers and producers.
The enterprise is entirely organic. We can therefore guarantee
wholesome, high quality produce to our customers.
Grain is cleaned before milling using a traditional aspirated seed
cleaner that removes dust, chaff and other light material whilst
separating grains by size through a series of reciprocating sieves.
If necessary, further separation into lighter and heavier fractions
can be achieved using a gravity table.
All flour is stone-milled. The mills are unique in the UK. Designed
and built by “Aster”, Brittany, the granite stones are dressed in
such a way that they are able to mill and mix the germ and the
inner layers of the bran with the rest of the flour, thereby
retaining the maximum nutritional value of the whole grain.
